YRC Worldwide selected as Green Supply Chain Partner
YRC Worldwide is helping companies achieve their sustainability objectives by reducing our CO2 emissions by a million tons per year. No simple task, but part of our commitment to protect and preserve the environment. In recognition of our Destination > Green initiatives, Inbound Logistics magazine selected YRC Worldwide as one of its 25 Green Supply Chain Partners.
Inbound Logistics created the list this year to recognize companies that are green innovators, and to provide an example to other shippers. They picked companies based on their ability to create value in the supply chain through sustainability and efficiency.
YRC Worldwide made a strong commitment to sustainability through a strategy of emission reduction and fuel efficiency that allows us to protect the environment while optimizing our resources. Several initiatives are under way that make our strategy a reality.
- New, integrated YRC network
- The YRC network has greatly improved efficiency. This means increased lane density, reduced handling, and optimized equipment usage. These factors have led to less empty miles and reduced emissions.
- Efficient use of trailer space
- YRC Worldwide service centers act as freight staging areas, which allow us to carpool shipments and create the greatest possible utilization of trailer space. This further reduces empty miles and emissions.
- Fuel-efficient equipment
- YRC Worldwide maintains a system-wide tire-pressure program that significantly improves fuel efficiency
- New fuel-efficient tires are being introduced to the entire fleet that provide a three-percent reduction in fuel consumption.
- We also purchase biodiesel, which burns cleaner than petroleum-based fuel. Last year YRC Worldwide purchased over 3 million gallons of bio-diesel.
- YRC Worldwide is testing hybrid vehicles in the congested stop-and-go traffic of the Northeast. So far results have shown a 20-25% drop in emissions.
- Driver participation
- All YRC Worldwide tractors have their speed capped at 63 miles per hour, and we work with our drivers to promote sustainable driving habits.
- To reduce emissions from overnight idling, YRC Worldwide buys lodging for our drivers during their federally-required 10-hour rest periods. For every hour of idling eliminated, one gallon of fuel is saved.
- Intermodal shipping
- Intermodal shipping has a smaller impact on the environment; that's why YRC Worldwide ships by rail when and where possible. In 2008, we used about 300 million rail miles.
YRC Worldwide is also an EPA SmartWayTM Transport Partner.
